RESUMO

The urgent demand for effective countermeasures against metallo-ß-lactamases (MBLs) necessitates development of novel metallo-ß-lactamase inhibitors (MBLIs). This study is dedicated to identifying critical chemical moieties within previously developed MBLIs, and critical MBLs should serve as the target in MBLI evaluations. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), a systematic literature analysis was conducted, and the NCBI RefSeq genome database was exploited to access the abundance profile and taxonomic distribution of MBLs and their variant types. Through the implementation of two distinct systematic approaches, we elucidated critical chemical moieties of MBLIs, providing pivotal information for rational drug design. We also prioritised MBLs and their variant types, highlighting the imperative need for comprehensive testing to ensure the potency and efficacy of the newly developed MBLIs. This approach contributes valuable information to advance the field of antimicrobial drug discovery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Appropriate evaluation and management of dysphagia are essential in neurological disorders. However, there is currently a lack of a simple yet reliable method for dysphagia evaluation. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of new dynamic M-mode ultrasonography (US) parameters of suprahyoid muscle (SHM) to evaluate dysphagia. DESIGN: Prospective observational, cross-sectional study. SETTING: Inpatient setting at neurology department of tertiary medical center. POPULATION: A total of 89 patients with dysphagia and 175 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Patients were subdivided into mild and severe dysphagia groups depending on the need for dietary changes and disease classification, which included amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, peripheral neuromuscular diseases, and stroke. METHODS: Dynamic M-mode US was performed during swallowing to obtain the SHM thickness (the baseline thickness of the SHM), SHM displacement (peak-to-peak amplitude of SHM movement), SHM difference (SHM displacement - SHM thickness), SHM ratio (SHM displacement/SHM thickness), peak-to-peak time, and total duration. A videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) was performed. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in SHM displacement and SHM difference according to dysphagia severity (P<0.001). The SHM ratio, total duration (P<0.001), and peak-to-peak time (P=0.001) differed significantly according to the patients' underlying diseases. The pharyngeal delay time and penetration-aspiration scale from the VFSS demonstrated significant negative correlations with SHM displacement and difference (P<0.001). By combining SHM difference and total duration, patients with dysphagia could be distinguished from healthy controls, with the highest negative predictive value of 95.6%. CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic M-mode US of the SHM provided added value in evaluating the severity of dysphagia and differentiating swallowing mechanics of dysphagia related to underlying neurological disorders. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Dynamic M-mode US of the SHM can serve as a supportive tool for rapid screening and repetitive follow-up of patients with dysphagia, which would contribute to dysphagia rehabilitation in patients with various neurological disorders.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Epinephrine is administered to increase coronary perfusion pressure during advanced life support and promote short-term survival. Recent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) guidelines recommend an epinephrine dosing interval of 3 to 5 minutes during resuscitation; however, scientific evidence supporting this recommendation is lacking. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the hemodynamic effects of repeated epinephrine doses during CPR by monitoring augmented blood pressure after its administration in a swine model of cardiac arrest. METHODS AND RESULTS: A secondary analysis of data from a published study was performed using a swine cardiac arrest model. The epinephrine dose was fixed at 1 mg, and the first dose of epinephrine was administered after no-flow and low-flow times of 2 minutes and 8 minutes, respectively, and subsequently administered every 4 minutes. Four cycles of dosing intervals were defined because a previous study was terminated 26 minutes after the induction of ventricular fibrillation. Augmented blood pressures and corresponding timelines were determined. Augmented blood pressure trends following cycles and the epinephrine effect duration were also monitored. Among the 140 CPR cycles, the augmented blood pressure after epinephrine administration was the highest during the first cycle of CPR and decreased gradually with further cycle repetitions. The epinephrine effect duration did not differ between repeated cycles. The maximum blood pressure was achieved 78 to 97 seconds after epinephrine administration. CONCLUSIONS: Hemodynamic augmentation with repeated epinephrine administration during CPR decreased with cycle progression. Further studies are required to develop an epinephrine administration strategy to maintain its hemodynamic effects during prolonged resuscitation.

RESUMO

The growing prevalence of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer procedures has resulted in an increased incidence of recurrent implantation failure (RIF), necessitating focused research in this area. STAT3, a key factor in maternal endometrial remodeling and stromal proliferation, is crucial for successful embryo implantation. While the relationship between STAT3 and RIF has been studied, the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in miRNAs, well-characterized gene expression modulators, on STAT3 in RIF cases remains uncharacterized. Here, we investigated 161 RIF patients and 268 healthy control subjects in the Korean population, analyzing the statistical association between miRNA genetic variants and RIF risk. We aimed to determine whether SNPs in specific miRNAs, namely miR-218-2 rs11134527 G>A, miR-34a rs2666433 G>A, miR-34a rs6577555 C>A, and miR-130a rs731384 G>A, were significantly associated with RIF risk. We identified a significant association between miR-34a rs6577555 C>A and RIF prevalence (implantation failure [IF] ≥ 2: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.264, 95% CI = 1.007-5.092, p = 0.048). These findings suggest that miR-34a rs6577555 C>A may contribute to an increased susceptibility to RIF. However, further investigations are necessary to elucidate the precise mechanisms underlying the role of miR-34a rs6577555 C>A in RIF. This study sheds light on the genetic and molecular factors underlying RIF, offering new avenues for research and potential advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of this complex condition.

RESUMO

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the primary opportunistic human pathogen responsible for a range of acute and chronic infections; it poses a significant threat to immunocompromised patients and is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for nosocomial infections. Its high resistance to a diverse array of antimicrobial agents presents an urgent health concern. Among the mechanisms contributing to resistance in P. aeruginosa, the horizontal acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) via mobile genetic elements (MGEs) has gained recognition as a substantial concern in clinical settings, thus indicating that a comprehensive understanding of ARG dissemination within the species is strongly required for surveillance. Here, two approaches, including a systematic literature analysis and a genome database survey, were employed to gain insights into ARG dissemination. The genome database enabled scrutinizing of all the available sequence information and various attributes of P. aeruginosa isolates, thus providing an extensive understanding of ARG dissemination within the species. By integrating both approaches, with a primary focus on the genome database survey, mobile ARGs that were linked or correlated with MGEs, important sequence types (STs) carrying diverse ARGs, and MGEs responsible for ARG dissemination were identified as critical factors requiring strict surveillance. Although human isolates play a primary role in dissemination, the importance of animal and environmental isolates has also been suggested. In this study, 25 critical mobile ARGs, 45 critical STs, and associated MGEs involved in ARG dissemination within the species, are suggested as critical factors. Surveillance and management of these prioritized factors across the One Health sectors are essential to mitigate the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively resistant (XDR) P. aeruginosa in clinical settings.

RESUMO

To assess the short-term operative and fertility outcomes of single-incision robotic myomectomy. We performed this retrospective cohort study of 286 women who underwent robotic single-site myomectomy using the da Vinci® Xi surgical system (RSSM group, n = 70) or robotic single-port myomectomy using the da Vinci® SP surgical system (RSPM group, n = 216). Data were collected through chart reviews and telephone interviews. Except operating time (94.6 ± 30.1 min in RSSM vs. 81.7 ± 20.1 min in RSPM) and location of the removed fibroids, there were no significant differences in the operative outcomes or characteristics of the removed fibroids between both groups. The proportion of fibroids in the lateral wall in RSPM (13.4%) was approximately twice that in RSSM (6.3%). There was no conversion to laparotomy or multiport access, and none of the women required readmission in either group. No significant difference in the complication rate was noted between groups, and all complications were resolved with conservative treatment. During the approximately 20-month follow-up period, in the RSSM and RSPM groups, the pregnancy rates were 54.5% and 67.4%, respectively, and the abortion rates were 33.3% and 22.6%, respectively. In terms of operative and fertility outcomes, single-site robotic myomectomy appears to be feasible and safe in women with symptomatic fibroids. The da Vinci® SP system is thought to be helpful in reducing operation time and surgically difficult myomectomy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare clinical and surgical outcomes of robotic single-port hysterectomy (RSPH) using the da Vinci® SP surgical system and robotic multisite hysterectomy (RMSH) with the da Vinci Xi system in benign gynecologic disease. METHODS: The retrospective study included 134 patients who underwent RSPH or RMSH between November 2019 and December 2020. Total operation time, amount of blood loss, and the change in hemoglobin (Hb) after surgery and the weight of the removed uteri were also measured. Data on complications such as post-operative fever and length of hospitalization were also compared and analyzed. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the total operation time between the two groups, although the operation time was slightly longer in the RSPH group. Results in the RSPH group were superior to the RMSH group in docking time and wound incision time (1.67 ± 0.79 vs. 5.46 ± 2.25 min, p-value <0.01; 6.48 ± 4.29 vs. 9.10 ± 4.64 min, p-value <0.01, respectively). On the other hand, wound suture time took longer in the RSPH group (18.12 ± 5.66 vs. 10.69 ± 3.18 min, p-value <0.01). The weights of the removed specimens were higher in the RMSH group (302.64 ± 190.56 vs. 369.24 ± 181.70 g, p-value <0.04). The amount of blood loss during surgery and the difference in hemoglobin (Hb) before and after surgery were less in the RSPH group (97.39 ± 113.79 vs. 224.93 ± 152.29 mL, p-value <0.01, 1.51 ± 1.08 vs. 2.54 ± 1.08 g/dL, p-value <0.01). When considering the weight difference as a correction between the two surgical groups (because there were many heavier samples in the RMSH group), the blood loss of the RSPH group was also less than that of the RMSH group by 115.95 ± 23.78 mL (p-value <0.01). CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of our data, the robotic hysterectomy using the da Vinci SP surgical system might be feasible and safe, even if the hysterectomy is complex, and comparable to robotic multisite surgery by the da Vinci Xi system.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the gas-sensing mechanism in bottom-gate organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using poly(triarylamine) (PTAA). A comparison of different device architectures revealed that the top-contact structure exhibited superior gas-sensing performance in terms of field-effect mobility and sensitivity. The thickness of the active layer played a critical role in enhancing these parameters in the top-contact structure. Moreover, the distance and pathway for charge carriers to reach the active channel were found to significantly influence the gas response. Additionally, the surface treatment of the SiO2 dielectric with hydrophobic self-assembled mono-layers led to further improvement in the performance of the OFETs and gas sensors by effectively passivating the silanol groups. Under optimal conditions, our PTAA-based gas sensors achieved an exceptionally high response (>200%/ppm) towards NO2. These findings highlight the importance of device and interface engineering for optimizing gas-sensing properties in amorphous polymer semiconductors, offering valuable insights for the design of advanced gas sensors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the quality of medical care in North Korea using data from North Korean medical research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included publications containing the keyword "medical" among North Korea's consecutive publications and selected 415 papers related to heart disease, brain disease, and emergency medical care published at The North Korean Data Center of the Ministry of Unification (https://unibook.unikorea.go.kr). Among 40 research articles, we reviewed ten with representative epidemiological data for cardiovascular treatment, and the latest medical materials were selected and analyzed in detail. RESULTS: Few studies reported the experience of large-scale medical facilities or verified professional performance. Proof of the efficacy of the latest drugs was rare, although the treatment results of interventional therapy and conventional heart surgery were reported. Efforts to improve emergency medical care and innovation of treatment materials using new technologies were being actively studied. However, careful interpretation is required due to the lack of objectivity in research data and some deviation in the composition of patients included in the data. CONCLUSION: Research of cardiovascular disease in North Korea is conducted at a very limited scope, although treatment results appear to be recorded. The management of cardiovascular disease and the establishment of an emergency medical system warrant global attention and cooperation for further improvement.

RESUMO

Until recently, the most standard treatment for sensorineural or sudden hearing loss, which is caused by inner ear damage or deterioration, has been systemic oral steroid administration. In recent, intratympanic steroid injections such as dexamethasone have been used for the treatment of sudden hearing loss as well. It is injected into the tympanic cavity through its membrane and is expected to diffuse over the round window located between the tympanic cavity and the inner ear. However, in clinical situations, the delivery time of steroids to the inner ear is shorter than 24 h, which does not allow for a sufficient therapeutic effect. Therefore, we applied a previously invented dual viscosity mixture vehicle (DVV) for intratympanic dexamethasone to a guinea pig model, which could reduce the side effects of systemic steroid administration with sufficient dwelling time for the treatment of hearing loss, and we investigated the physiological changes with a global proteomic approach. In this study, we extracted perilymph in three different conditions from guinea pigs treated with dexamethasone-embedded DVV, dexamethasone mixed in saline, and control groups to compare proteomic changes using tandem mass spectrometry analysis. After liquid chromatography coupled tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis, we first identified 46 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) that were statistically significant after one-way ANOVA multiple-sample test. We also performed pairwise comparisons among each group to identify DEPs closely related to the treatment response of dexamethasone-embedded DVV. Gene ontology enrichment analysis showed that these DEPs were mostly related to inflammation, immune, actin remodeling, and antioxidant-related processes. As a result, the proteome changes in the DVV-treated groups revealed that most upregulated proteins activate the cell proliferation process, and downregulated proteins inhibit apoptosis and inflammatory reactions. Moreover, the reactive oxygen process was also regulated by DEPs after DVV treatment.

RESUMO

Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a global threat to modern healthcare systems and has nullified many commonly used antibiotics. ß-Lactam antibiotics are among the most successful and occupy approximately two-thirds of the prescription antibiotic market. They inhibit the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer in the bacterial cell wall by mimicking the D-Ala-D-Ala in the pentapeptide crosslinking neighboring glycan chains. To date, various ß-lactam antibiotics have been developed to increase the spectrum of activity and evade drug resistance. This review emphasizes the three-dimensional structural characteristics of ß-lactam antibiotics regarding the overall scaffold, working mechanism, chemical diversity, and hydrolysis mechanism by ß-lactamases. The structural insight into various ß-lactams will provide an in-depth understanding of the antibacterial efficacy and susceptibility to drug resistance in multidrug-resistant bacteria and help to develop better ß-lactam antibiotics and inhibitors.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to introduce the implemented MEDBIZ platform based on the internet of medical things (IoMT) supporting real-time digital health services for precision medicine. In addition, we demonstrated four empirical studies of the digital health ecosystem that could provide real-time healthcare services based on IoMT using real-world data from in-hospital and out-hospital patients. Implemented MEDBIZ platform based on the IoMT devices and big data to provide digital healthcare services to the enterprise and users. The big data platform is consisting of four main components: IoMT, core, analytics, and services. Among the implemented MEDBIZ platform, we performed four clinical trials that designed monitoring services related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, metabolic syndrome, arrhythmia, and diabetes mellitus. Of the four empirical studies on monitoring services, two had been completed and the rest were still in progress. In the metabolic syndrome monitoring service, two studies were reported. One was reported that intervention components, especially wearable devices and mobile apps, made systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and glycosylated hemoglobin decrease after 6 months. Another one was presented that increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were prevented in participants with the pre-metabolic syndrome. Also, self-care using healthcare devices might help prevent and manage metabolic syndrome. In the arrhythmia monitoring service, during the real-time monitoring of vital signs remotely at the monitoring center, 318 (15.9%) general hikers found abnormal signals, and 296 (93.1%) people were recommended for treatment. We demonstrated the implemented MEDBIZ platform based on IoMT supporting digital healthcare services by acquiring real-world data for getting real-world evidence. And then through this platform, we were developing software as a medical device, digital therapeutics, and digital healthcare services, and contributing to the development of the digital health ecosystem.

RESUMO

The measurement of skeletal muscle mass is essential for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. Muscle ultrasonography has emerged as a useful tool for evaluating sarcopenia because it can be used to assess muscle quality and quantity. This study investigated whether muscle ultrasonography is effective for estimating appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and screening for sarcopenia. This study prospectively enrolled 212 healthy volunteers aged 40-80 years. ASM was measured using the bioelectrical impedance analysis. Muscle thickness (MT) and echo-intensity (EI) were measured in four muscles (biceps brachii, BB; triceps brachii, TB; rectus femoris, RF; biceps femoris, BF) on the dominant hand. A hold-out cross-validation method was used to develop and validate the ASM prediction equation. In the model development group, the ASM prediction equations were deduced as follows: estimated ASM for men (kg) = 0.167 × weight (kg) + 0.228 × height (cm) + 0.143 × MT of BF (mm)- 0.822 × EI to MT ratio of BB- 28.187 (R2 = 0.830) and estimated ASM for women (kg) = 0.115 × weight + 0.215 × height (cm) + 0.139 × MT of RF-0.638 × EI to MT ratio of BB- 23.502 (R2 = 0.859). In the cross-validation group, the estimated ASM did not significantly differ from the measured ASM in both men (p = 0.775; intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.948) and women (p = 0.516; ICC = 0.973). In addition, multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the ratios of EI to MT in the BF and RF muscles in men and MT in the BB muscle in women could be valuable parameters for sarcopenia screening. Therefore, our study suggests that muscle ultrasound could be an effective tool for estimating ASM and screening sarcopenia.

RESUMO

Dual-ion Li metal batteries based on non-flammable SO2-in-salt inorganic electrolytes ( Li-SO2 batteries) offer high safety and energy density. The use of cupric oxide (CuO) as a self-activating cathode material achieves a high specific capacity with cost-effective manufacturing in Li-SO2 batteries, but its cycle retention performance deteriorates owing to the significant morphological changes of the cathode active materials. Herein, we report the catalytic effect of carbonaceous materials used in the cathode material of Li-SO2 batteries, which act as templates to help recrystallize the active materials in the activation and conversion reactions. We found that the combination of oxidative-cyclized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with N-doped carbonaceous materials and multi-yolk-shell CuO (MYS-CuO) nanoclusters as cathode active materials can significantly increase the specific capacity to 315.9 mAh g- 1 (93.8% of the theoretical value) at 0.2 C, which corresponds to an energy density of 1295 Wh kgCuO-1, with a capacity retention of 84.46% at the 200th cycle, and the cathode exhibited an atypical blossom-like morphological change.

RESUMO

Antibiotic resistance is a major global public health concern. Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen that has emerged as a global threat because of its high levels of resistance to many antibiotics, particularly those considered as last-resort antibiotics, such as carbapenems. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) play an important role in the dissemination and expression of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), including the mobilization of ARGs within and between species. We conducted an in-depth, systematic investigation of the occurrence and dissemination of ARGs associated with MGEs in A. baumannii. We focused on a cross-sectoral approach that integrates humans, animals, and environments. Four strategies for the prevention of ARG dissemination through MGEs have been discussed: prevention of airborne transmission of ARGs using semi-permeable membrane-covered thermophilic composting; application of nanomaterials for the removal of emerging pollutants (antibiotics) and pathogens; tertiary treatment technologies for controlling ARGs and MGEs in wastewater treatment plants; and the removal of ARGs by advanced oxidation techniques. This review contemplates and evaluates the major drivers involved in the transmission of ARGs from the cross-sectoral perspective and ARG-transfer prevention processes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of neoplasm of uncertain behavior of uterus (NUBU) diagnosed after hysterectomy, myomectomy, or hysteroscopy for presumed leiomyomas. METHODS: We performed this population-based retrospective cohort study using the Korean national health insurance database between January 2002 and December 2018. Women with or without NUBU diagnosed after surgery were extracted using diagnosis codes and procedure codes. RESULTS: The median age of patients who underwent surgery for presumed leiomyomas was 39 years (interquartile range [IQR] 31-47 years). The median age of women diagnosed with NUBU after surgery was 45 years (IQR 38-49 years). The incidence of NUBU diagnosed after surgery for presumed leiomyomas was 1.89%. The incidences of NUBU diagnosed after hysterectomy, myomectomy, or hysteroscopic myomectomy for presumed leiomyomas were 2.03%, 1.84%, or 1.64%, respectively. There was no difference in the incidence of NUBU according to these surgical methods. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of the surgical procedure performed, the incidence of NUBU diagnosed after surgery was higher than that of unexpected uterine malignancy diagnosed after hysterectomy (0.19%), myomectomy (0.12%), or hysteroscopic myomectomy (0.86%) for presumed leiomyoma. Compared with unexpected uterine malignancy, NUBU seems to occur in relatively young women.

RESUMO

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a pathological condition of inflammatory bowel disease, is a chronic inflammatory disorder that involves an abnormal immune response and epithelial barrier dysfunction. Although we have previously reported the anti-inflammatory effects of 7-hydroxyl-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (7-HMIA), a synthesized analog of arvelexin on macrophages and paw edema, its anti-colitis effect and its mechanism are not known. In this study, colitis was induced in mice model by 4% (w/v) dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) solution in drinking water for 9 days. At the same time, from the first day of administering drinking water containing DSS, the animals were treated with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), 75 mg/kg/day, orally) or 7-HMIA (10 or 20 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally), depending on the experimental group, respectively. The studies were terminated on the tenth day of the experiment. Our data showed that 7-HMIA reduced the disease activity index and spleen/body weight (S/B) ratio, and improved the shortened colon length comparable to the effects of 5-ASA observed in the DSS-exposed mice. 7-HMIA, like 5-ASA, inhibited the histological damage, such as a thickened colonic muscle layer and shortened crypt length in the colon of the mice with DSS-induced colitis. 7-HMIA restored the tight junction-related proteins (occludin, claudin-1, and claudin-2) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition-mediated proteins (E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and vimentin) in the colon tissue of mice with DSS-induced colitis. Additionally, 7-HMIA (20 mg/kg/day) showed the inhibitory effects similar to that of 5-ASA on the myeloperoxidase activity, interleukin (IL)-6 production, and expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and even showed greater inhibition of IL-1ß production in the DSS-induced mice. Furthermore, the DSS-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) were effectively suppressed by 7-HMIA treatment like the effects of 5-ASA. Overall, our findings revealed that 7-HMIA decreased the severity of colitis by protecting the inflamed mucosal barrier by interfering with NF-κB and STAT3 activation.

RESUMO

In this study, a deep learning model (deepPLM) is shown to automatically detect periodic limb movement syndrome (PLMS) based on electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The designed deepPLM model consists of four 1D convolutional layers, two long short-term memory units, and a fully connected layer. The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men sleep (MrOS) study dataset was used to construct the model, including training, validating, and testing the model. A single-lead ECG signal of the polysomnographic recording was used for each of the 52 subjects (26 controls and 26 patients) in the MrOS dataset. The ECG signal was normalized and segmented (10 s duration), and it was divided into a training set (66,560 episodes), a validation set (16,640 episodes), and a test set (20,800 episodes). The performance evaluation of the deepPLM model resulted in an F1-score of 92.0%, a precision score of 90.0%, and a recall score of 93.0% for the control set, and 92.0%, 93.0%, and 90.0%, respectively, for the patient set. The results demonstrate the possibility of automatic PLMS detection in patients by using the deepPLM model based on a single-lead ECG. This could be an alternative method for PLMS screening and a helpful tool for home healthcare services for the elderly population.

RESUMO

Microstructural control during the solution processing of small-molecule semiconductors (namely, soluble acene) is important for enhancing the performance of field-effect transistors (FET) and sensors. This focused review introduces strategies to enhance the gas-sensing properties (sensitivity, recovery, selectivity, and stability) of soluble acene FET sensors by considering their sensing mechanism. Defects, such as grain boundaries and crystal edges, provide diffusion pathways for target gas molecules to reach the semiconductor-dielectric interface, thereby enhancing sensitivity and recovery. Representative studies on grain boundary engineering, patterning, and pore generation in the formation of soluble acene crystals are reviewed. The phase separation and microstructure of soluble acene/polymer blends for enhancing gas-sensing performance are also reviewed. Finally, flexible gas sensors using soluble acenes and soluble acene/polymer blends are introduced, and future research perspectives in this field are suggested.
